PATIENT FUNDRAISING
updated 10/21/18

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS):

"The cost of a transplant and follow-up care varies across the country and by the organ type. Even before your transplant, these costs can add up quickly. Few patients are able to pay all of the costs of transplantation from a single source. Most likely, you will have to rely on several sources."

Many sources quote transplantation evaluation, surgery and aftercare to range between $100,000 to $700,000 for just the first year. Medication for immunosuppressants can range anywhere between $8500 to $36,000 per year.

The cost of transplantation varies, but all agree that the costs are high with insurance, Medicare and Medicaid only providing limited coverage.

Organizations that can help you set up trust accounts so donations are tax deductible and/or can help you with how to do fundraising are:
  • American Liver Foundation  In 2010, the ALF Transplant Fund was under review.  It looks like it has not been re-established.
  • Children's Organ Transplant Association Fundraising Campaigns
  • National Foundation for Transplants (NTF)
  • HelpHOPELive

Social Security Disability is not a fundraising source, but an avenue for income that a transplant recipient may want to check into. To learn more about this program, visit the U.S. Social Security website here.
